Understanding SOHO Routers

  1. What differentiates a SOHO router from an Enterprise router?
  2. A SOHO router has more limited power than an Enterprise router. A SOHO router can be configured with a Graphical User Interface (GUI), whereas an Enterprise router can only be configured via command line.

  3. When dealing with an ISP, why might you want a static IP address?
  4. It avoids the problems caused by dynamic addressing by remaining to same.

  5. What functions (services) are normally found in a SOHO router?
  6. DHCP, DNS, firewall, port forwarding, and port triggering.

  7. What does a firewall do?
  8. A firewall blocks traffic into specific ports, which can keep attackers and other malicious entities from attacking the network.

  9. With a SOHO router, why might redundancy be desirable?
  10. Redundancy is important because if an error occurs, it will still be possible to connect to the Internet.

  11. What is a DMZ? Why would an enterprise want one?
  12. The DMZ, or Demilitarized Zone, is an area between the home network and the Internet that includes some devices and ports that are isolated and highly protected from the Internet. It would allow an enterprise or small company to improve their security.

  13. In a small office, what would be the disadvantage of using enterprise level routers?
  14. A small office may not have the IT personnel or individual employee expertise to interface with the command line interface that is used to conifgure the router. It also has a high equipment cost./p>
