Physical Network Segmentation

  1. What is a demarc point?
  2. The demarc point is the point at which the telecommunication company's network ends and the private network of the customer begins.

  3. What is the signficance of a demarc point?
  4. It is the point where one can determine which side is responsible for fixing any issues that may occur - the customer side, or the provider side.

  5. What is a Main Distribution Frame?
  6. The MDF is a central location that connects equipment inside a telecommunications facility to cables and subscriber carrier equipment.

  7. What is an Intermediate Distribution Frame?
  8. It is a midpoint that connects different network segments of a floor, area, or building back to the main distribution frame.

  9. Why use an IDF?
  10. An IDF helps reduce the amount of cabling that goes into the MDF, and makes it easier to work on smaller areas of the network individually.

  11. In a conventional small network, where would you expect to find the MDF?
  12. It would likely be located in the server room.

  13. If you had a network that covered five floors in a building, how many IDF(s) and MDF(s) would you expect to have?
  14. You could expect 5 IDFs and 1 MDF.

  15. What purpose does an IDF serve?
  16. An IDF serves as a subpoint on the network, segmenting it out from the MDF to make it easier to manage and work on.
